 Jungle Survival Course
 Activities
 San Juan River Delta
One of the most unusual activities offered by the Rio Indio Lodge is a jungle survival course. The week long course is taught in the Nicaraguan jungle by retired Army Ranger  Mike Lilla, a jungle survival specialist and native Rama Indians. The course is limited to 12 participants, it is a team exercise and each participant will be paired with another during the course. This is a great opportunity for you and a friend to experience together. Some of the techniques taught include how to:  find food and water; build shelter, fire and snares; make rope; handle a machete; map/compass instruction, primitive hand fishing tactics, night vision and jungle hiking.

Begun in 2006, the course is a natural outgrowth of a personal experience of Dr. Alfredo Lopez, owner of the Rio Indio Lodge. Dr. Lopez also contributes by teaching how to rig a stretcher, perform field first aid and the techniques of mental toughness necessary for survival.

When you register for the survival course you are also deciding to make a trip into one of the most ecologically diverse locations in the world, the jungles of the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. Arriving in San Jose, Costa Rica, you are in a mountain valley of 3,400 ft. of elevation, surrounded by three volcanoes. Early the next morning you will travel by van out of the valley, through the central mountains to the town of Puerto Viejo on the Rio Sarapiqui. Your group boards a river boat for the trip down the Rio Sarapiqui to the Rio San Juan, where you make your border crossing into Nicaragua. You will continue south on the Rio San Juan arriving at The Rio Indio Lodge, on the Caribbean coast in the area known as San Juan del Norte.

Once at the lodge you will start your orientation, class room instructions and preparation for your field work deep in the Nicaraguan jungle. The next 5 days will be spent in the jungle learning the skills required for survival. Upon completion of the field work you will return to the Rio Indio Lodge for a celebratory awards dinner. The next morning breakfast is served at the lodge and you will transfer to San Jose, Costa Rica, for your return flight home, armed with the knowledge of survival.
